When creating ultra-luxury leather goods, every detail matters, and it all begins with the hide. Our reputation as a leading bespoke leather goods atelier is built on precision, artistry, and partnerships with the world's best tanneries. In this first video of a two-part series, we spotlight Tannery Rémy Carriat, a family-run tannery whose philosophy and craftsmanship have matched Peter Nitz's values since the very beginning.

A Family Legacy Since 1927
Founded in 1927, Tannery Rémy Carriat began with a focus on shoes under the vision of its founder. Later, under the guidance of the second generation, the tannery expanded into furniture leather. Today, the business is led by Marie Carriat, the third generation, who has steered the atelier into the world of luxury accessories.
Located in Espelette, a Basque town known to many for its prized red spices, the tannery has quietly built an international reputation as one of the finest producers of leather in the world. Its main objective is clear and uncompromising: keep the leather as natural as possible, in order to honor the inherent beauty of the hide.

Why Tannery Rémy Carriat?
For Peter Nitz, the story of Rémy Carriat is also deeply personal. Nearly 20 years ago, the very first bag Peter created was crafted from Carriat leather. What drew him in then remains true today: an obsession with the supple hand-feel, the strength, and the exquisite natural grain of these hides.
For Peter, Rémy Carriat is not just a tannery, it is a creative partner. Their DNA is aligned with ours: ensuring quality, and integrity in every aspect of the business. We both prioritise artistry over industry, and the outcome of the leather is naturally exceptional.

Two Decades of Trust
- Consistency: A guaranteed great product, batch after batch. "For almost two decades, I have worked with Carriat leathers. I know exactly what I'll get: uncompromising quality that allows me to create heirloom pieces for my clients." says Peter Nitz.
- Creative Freedom: Few tanneries in the world allow artisans to request such limited quantities. For bespoke leather work, this is priceless. Tannery Rémy Carriat offer a minimum of six hides per color, and this allows flexibility to explore new ideas in small runs. They are also willing to innovate and experiment with unique tones.
- Independent & family-owned: Unlike industrial-scale producers, Tannery Rémy Carriat has chosen to remain a family-run tannery with a deliberately small footprint. This independence allows them to maintain quality, innovation, and flexibility that larger operations cannot match.
